Opening prayer dua — Allahumma baid

اللهم باعد بيني وبين خطاياي كما باعدت بين المشرق والمغرب

Allāhumma bāʿid baynī wa-bayna khaṭāyāya kamā bāʿadta bayna l-mashriqi wa-l-maghrib.

Allah, put distance between me and my sins, as You put distance between east and west.

اللهم أنقني من خطاياي كالثوب الأبيض من الدنس

Allāhumma anqinī min khaṭāyāya ka-th-thawbi l-abyaḍi mina d-danas.

Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt.

اللهم اغسلني بالثلج والماء والبرد

Allāhumma ghsilnī bi-th-thalji wa-l-māʾi wa-l-barad.

Allah, wash me with snow, water and hail.

When to read

The report places this invocation in the pause between the opening takbir and recitation. This complete Abu Dawud wording uses anqini and “wash me”, with snow, water and hail in that order. Other opening formulas are alternatives, not additional obligatory steps.
